Lesson 64 The Channel Tunnel海峡隧道 First listen and then answer the question.

Why was the first tunnel not pleted? In 1858, a French engineer, Aime Thome de Gamond, arrived in England with a plan for a enty-one-mile tunnel under the English Channel. He said that it would be possible to build a platform in the centre of the Channel. This platform would serve as a port and a railw*** station. The tunnel would be well-ventilated if tall chimneys were built above sea level. In 1860, a better plan was put forward by an Englishman, William Low. He suggested that a double railw***-tunnel should be built. This would solve the problem of ventilation, for if a train entered this tunnel, it would draw in fresh air behind it. Forty-o years later a tunnel was actually begun. If, at the time, the British had not feared invasion, it would have been pleted. The world had to wait almost another 100 years for the Channel Tunnel. It was officially opened on March 7,1994, finally connecting Britain to the European continent.New words and expressions 生词和短语 tunnel n.

Most of us have formed an unrealistic picture of life on a desert island. We sometimes imagine a desert island to be a sort of paradise where the sun alw***s shines.Life there is simple and good.Ripe fruit falls from the trees and you never have to work. The other side of the picture is quite the opposite.Life on a desert island is wretched. You either starve to death or live like Robinson Crusoe,Waiting for a boat which never es.Perhaps there is an element of truth in both these pictures, but few us have had the opportunity to find out.Two men who recently spent five d***s on a coral island wished they had st***ed there longer. They were taking a badly damaged boat from the Virgin Islands to Miami to have it repaired.During the journey, their boat began to sink. They quickly loaded a *** all ru***er dinghy with food, matches, and cans of beer and rowed for a few miles across the Cari***ean until they arrived at a tiny coral island. There were hardly any trees on the island and there was no water, but this did not prove to be a problem. The men collected rainwater in the ru***er dinghy. As they had brought a spear gun with them, they had plenty to eat. They c***ght lobster and fish every d***,and,as one of them put it 'ate like kings'.When a passing tanker rescued them five d***s later, both men were genuinely sorry that they had to leave. Chickens sl***ghtered in the United States, claim officials in Brussels, are not fit to grace European tables. No,s*** the American:our fowl are fine,we simply clean them in a different w***.These d***s,it is differences in national regulations, far more than tariffs, that put sand in the wheels of trade beeen rich countries. It is not just farmers who are plaining. An electric razor that meets the European Union's safety standards must be approved by American testers before it can be sold in the United States, and an American-made dialysis machine needs the EU's ok*** before is hits the market in Europe. As it happens,a razor that is safe in Europe is unlikely to electrocute Americans. So,ask businesses on both sides of the Atlantic, why have o lots of tests where one would do?Politicians agree,in principle,so America and the EU have been trying to reach a deal which would eliminate the need to double-test many products. They hope to finish in time for a trade summit beeen America and the EU on M*** 28TH.Although negotiators are optimistic, the details are plex enough that they m*** be hard-pressed to get a deal at all. Why?One difficulty is to construct the agreements. The Americans would happily reach one accord on standards for medical devices and them hammer out different pacts covering,s***,electronic goods and drug manufacturing. The EU -- following fine continental traditions -- wants agreement on general principles, which could be applied to many types of products and perhaps extended to other countries. From:The Economist,M*** 24th,1997。

Before returning home at night,艾尔弗一直这样;Alf' for the simple reason that they usually wear a collar and tie to go to work. He will be earning only half as much as he used to, but he feels that his rise in status is well worth the loss of money.他将来挣的钱只有他现在的一半,系着领带去上班;s wife has never discovered that she married a dustman and she never will. He will soon be working in an office,艾尔弗的妻子一直不知道她嫁给了一个清洁工,而且她永远也不会知道了,for Alf has just found another job,地位升高了.

Flying cats Cats never fail to fascinate human beings. They can be friendly and affectionate towards humans, but they lead mysterious lives of their own as well. They never bee submissive like dogs and horses. As a result, humans have learned to respect feline independence. Most cats remain suspicious of humans all their lives. One of the things that fascinates us most about cats is the popular belief that they have nine lives.Apparently, there is a good deal of truth in this idea.A cat's ability to survive falls is based on fact. Recently the New York Animal Medical Centre made a study of 132 cats over a period of five months. All these cats had one experience in mon:they had fallen off high buildings, yet only eight of them died from shock of injuries.Of course,New York is the ideal place for such an interesting study, bec***se there is no shortage of tall buildings. There are plenty of high-rise windowsills to fall from! One cat,Sabrina, fell 32 stories, yet only suffered from a broken tooth.'Cats behave like well-trained paratroopers,'a doctor said.It seems that the further cats fall, the less they are likely to injure themselves. In a long drop, they reach speeds of 60 miles an hour and more.At high speeds, falling cats have time to relax. They stretch out their legs like flying squirrels. This increases their air-resistance and reduces the shock of impact when they hit the ground.。

One cat ,Sabrina,fell 32 storeys……”

When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London.

forty-five miles后面应该还有to the~~~被省略了

Farm labourers said that they alw***s woke up to find that work had been done overnight.
